Oops, wrong Tommy Fleetwood: European Tour pays $230k to another golfer

09 August 2018, 06:27 | Henrietta Morgan

A surprised Tommy Fleetwood saw the amusing side after finding out his Open Championship prize money was mistakenly paid into the bank account of someone who shares the same name.

Imagine waking up to $150,000 being deposited in your bank account and having no idea why you were suddenly a little heavier in the wallet.

On Wednesday, a screenshot of the American Fleetwood's bank account was posted to Twitter by a friend, the prize money sitting there just above a purchase at Walmart. Thorner said: "He called it up [on his phone] and looked at his statement, and that's when he shouted 'Holy smoke, I've just had $154,000 paid into my account'".

The problem: The European Tour sent the money to the wrong Tommy Fleetwood.

Chase Elliott gets first Cup victory
AJ Allmendinger drove the No. 23 to a second-place finish Saturday in the Xfinity race at The Glen. Elliott sprinted away from Truex after Truex bobbled in the bus stop on the penultimate lap.

The European Tour have apologised after Tommy Fleetwood's Open winnings of nearly £120,000 were sent to the wrong Tommy Fleetwood. He was not positive it was the same amount that Tommy won at the Open but we checked and it was. I think what happened was that he played some Challenge Tour events on the European Tour back in the day and they must still have his details.

Instead, it was deposited into the account of another Tommy Fleetwood, an American club pro.

It took me about an hour to get that sorted out, and I have plenty more stories like that.

The elder Fleetwood is now reportedly in the process of returning the money to the World No. 11 Fleetwood, but at least he can now probably say he's received more money as a pro than any of his colleagues.

Newspaper Review: Israel's killing of a Gaza teen focus of dailies
The Palestinians and the United Nations similarly dispute Israel's assertion that it ended its occupation of Gaza in 2005. He writes: "We are continuing intensive work to build land and sea obstacles around Gaza".

Fleetwood, who is also a caddie, told Reuters he had been trying to get in touch with the 27-year-old Englishman.

"I told him he should keep it", Thorner, a golf school owner, told USA TODAY Sports.

Fleetwood, who begins his PGA Championship bid at Bellerive on Thursday, said: "It looks pretty genuine".
