The Academywhich runs the Oscars ceremony has added a new category to honour popular films and has promised a brisk three-hour ceremony and a much earlier air date in 2020.
In a statement, the organization revealed the addition of a new category that is being designed around "outstanding achievement in popular film", promising more details and eligibility requirements to come.
As THR notes, this is probably an attempt to make the Oscars seem more relevant, instead of taking place right at the end of the months-long awards circuit.
Mobile back to price competition in 'unlimited'
During congestion, Essentials customers may notice speeds lower than other customers and further reduction if using 50GB/month. Most unlimited plans allow you at least 22GB of data before being throttled, while T-Mobile and Sprint hit the brakes at 50GB.
It's among three changes approved on Tuesday by the Academy's board of governors. Which is a huge bummer for those of us who used to tune in exclusively to see who'd win the award for Best Costume Design.
The 2019 ceremony will air February 24, while the 2020 ceremony will move to February 9. And what criteria will be used to determine whether a film qualifies as "popular?"
The changes are unlikely to sit well with sections of the film industry who will be concerned that the awards will inevitably be split between the main awards and a second tier of categories which, ultimately, will be seen to matter less. Several tweets have flagged controversial past Best Picture winners that were awarded over arguably worthier contenders - such as Forrest Gump over Pulp Fiction.
This complaint has already spawned some changes to the Academy's annual ceremony, most notably a decision in 2009 to expand Best Picture nominees from five to 10 in part because one of 2008's most acclaimed films, The Dark Knight, was left out of the Best Picture category that year. Luckily, every now and then, they make moves that show that they're kind of listening (though after having the lowest-rated Academy Awards showing past year, they kind of have to, right?).
The Academy Awards, often acknowledged as one of the more prestigious award ceremonies along with the Nickelodeon Kids Choice Awards, have announced some sweeping changes.
The next Oscars air Sunday, February 24, 2019. "We have the MTV Movie Awards for that kind of junk", he said. I hope that they will also think about what a big deal a new category is for the Academy and to that I say BRAVO to them.
Going forward, some awards will be presented during commercial breaks, with edited acceptance speeches broadcast later in the program.
