White House adviser Bolton urges North Korea to act on denuclearization
North Korea said it has halted nuclear and missile tests and dismantled its nuclear test site as practical steps toward denuclearization, but it lashed out at the USA for unilaterally demanding North Korea denuclearize first.
Bolton, in an interview on Fox News, said U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo was prepared to return to North Korea for another meeting with Kim. The station had been used to test major long-range ballistic missiles and satellites.
A foreign ministry spokesman said in a statement on state-run KCNA that North Korea was still willing to implement a broad agreement made at the landmark June 12 summit in Singapore between U.S. President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. In February 2016, the North launched its Gwangmyeongsong-4 satellite at the site, a month after the fourth nuclear test, according to Hankyoreh.
The two sides vowed at that time to work towards North Korea's denuclearisation but have struggled to reach a deal to meet that goal, with the United States insisting that sanctions pressure must be maintained during negotiations.
But, following the meeting, US intelligence officials said they believed North Korea was "deceiving" the USA, saying the regime was bolstering production for nuclear weapons at "multiple secret sites" in recent months.
"However, the United States responded to our expectation by inciting global sanctions and pressure against the DPRK", it said in a statement carried by KCNA news agency.
It continued: "Now, the issue in question is that going against the intention of President Trump to advance the DPRK - US relations, some high level officials within the US administration are making baseless allegations against us and making desperate attempts at intensifying the global sanctions and pressure". "What we need is performance from North Korea on denuclearization".
South and North Korea technically remain at war as the Korean War ended only with the armistice treaty. Pompeo's comments came on the heels of a United Nations report that found North Korea has not stopped its nuclear and missile programs and is violating U.N. sanctions, including through illicit ship-to-ship transfers of oil.
Earlier on Thursday, North Korea's Rodong Sinmun said in a commentary that ending the Korean War is "the first process for ensuring peace and security not only in the Korean peninsula but also in the region and the world".
