OpenAI Five Dota 2 Bots Beat Top Human Players

OpenAI Five Dota 2 Bots Beat Top Human Players

This is not the first time bots engineered by OpenAI managed to defeat human players in the immensely popular MOBA game.

The bot technology of OpenAI has reached a point where it can now destroy a team of highly skilled, former professional, Dota 2 players - in a match that wasn't even close. Something interesting to note is that after the humans paused the first game, and the bots paused game two.

OpenAI Five has been working towards their goal of competing against the best pro team at The International which is the largest annual Dota tournament in the world. "The typical Dota 2 game, even on the professional tier, involves quite a bit of equivocation about whether to engage in a fight, or whether to try to shift it to a more favorable battleground, or to run away from it completely". Heroes in Dota 2 often interact in complex ways.

OpenAI, a non-profit research company co-founded by tech fixtures Elon Musk and Sam Altman, has been working on the Dota-playing bots for a year. In preparation the bots played through 180 years' worth of games against each other every day.

Johnson is yet to issue a response. "It's not the job of the Prime Minister to tell backbenchers what to do. Armeena added, "If a woman wants to wear a short dress, it is her right and freedom to do so".

Next up for OpenAI will be to take on one the best players in the world at The International 8, in September. The firm has also been tweaking the neural networks, altering the bot team's in-game reaction time to near human levels, and helping it learn additional strategies. After the game 2 draft, OpenAI Five predicted a 76.2% win probability, and won the second in 24 minutes and 53 seconds.

Regardless, the OpenAI victory is incredible impressive, even more so because only a matter of months ago it was failing to beat amateur opposition. Despite the wealth of experience on the team, the humans could do little against the never-ending onslaught and precision of OpenAI, and they quickly lost in humiliating fashion.
