White supremacists are set to rally outside the White House on Sunday, one year after torch-wielding neo-Nazis clashed with counter demonstrators in a deadly protest that highlighted the growing boldness of the extreme right in the United States.
The states of emergency will allow state and city agencies to get additional resources, Gov. Ralph Northam said in a statement.
Violent fighting broke out between attendees and counter-protesters that day. They unfurled a banner reading "Last year they came w/ torches".
Stern and other state, county and city officials said to expect large numbers of law enforcement officers in and around Charlottesville as part of a large-scale, multiagency safety and security plan to head off violence. Thirty-two-year-old counter-protester Heather Heyer was killed by self-described white supremacist James Alex Fields Jr., who rammed a vehicle into a crowd at high speed.
