Barcelona’s newly installed captain Lionel Messi will lead his team against Sevilla in the Spanish Super Cup

The Spanish football federation (RFEF) announced that teams could field an unlimited number of players without European Union citizenship, a change in the rules for La Liga, which limits teams to three non-EU players in a matchday squad.

It had been thought the Spanish Super Cup was the same but Sevilla said they would object to "an improper line-up".

That haul includes four Champions League wins, nine La Liga crowns and six Copas del Rey, as well as a record five Ballons d'Or.

Real Madrid plan several tributes ahead of 2019 Bernabeu Trophy
He, however, believes the five-time Ballon d'Or victor can take the Old Lady to the next level in their pursuit of European glory. Juve paid real Madrid for Ronaldo 100-120 million euros.

The Spanish Super Cup against Sevilla is a game of particular significance for Leo Messi: if the new Barcelona captain finds himself on the winning side in Tangiers he will become the most successful player in Camp Nou history by lifting a 33 career trophy with the club.

Sevilla FC is surprised by the RFEF's announcement 24 hours before the Super Cup.

Messi replaced the departed Andres Iniesta as Barcelona's first-choice skipper, and is named in a front three alongside Luis Suarez and Ousmane Dembele for tonight's match in Morocco. In their last statement for the 2018-2019 season, only three were due to be allowed, without exception.

There is also a debut for Arthur Melo in midfield, although Arturo Vidal and Malcom are forced to wait for their Barcelona bows, with the former being named amongst the substitutes alongside World Cup finalists Ivan Rakitic and Samuel Umtiti.

Despite the adjustment potentially giving his side an edge, Barca boss Valverde is also far from content. "With all the trouble we have had this week with non-EU squad members, they could have warned us before".

As Andres Iniesta's successor as Blaugrana captain, it fell on Messi to lift the Supercopa trophy, a landmark achievement for the fantastic Argentine.
