Lake County health officials announced Friday that the county's first case of West Nile virus this year has been confirmed, and involves a Waukegan woman in her 60s. Most people with this type of West Nile Virus disease recover completely, but fatigue and weakness can last for weeks or months.

Common symptoms include fever, nausea, headache and muscle ache.

So far this year, Kansas has had two cases of the neuro invasive form of West Nile, both in Johnson County.

Last year IDPH reported the first human West Nile virus death in IL on September 29, 2017.

Birds and horses can also contract the virus.

West Nile virus is transmitted through the bite of a mosquito.

In response, the health department is reminding residents to protect themselves against mosquito bites.

One in 150 patients will get a neuro invasive form of West Nile, which can lead to severe complications, or even death, so it is important for people to be aware of certain symptoms you'd want to have checked out.
