A second person has been diagnosed with monkeypox in England, health officials confirmed.
Second UK case of monkeypox diagnosed at Blackpool hospitalBut this afternoon, bosses at Lancashire Teaching Hospitals said there had been no cases in Preston or Chorley, contrary to rumour.
But as a precaution, officials from Public Health England said they were contacting people who had been in close proximity to the patient during the flight, "to ensure that if [others] do become unwell they can be treated quickly", the statement said.
The most obvious symptom is a rash, which usually appears on the face before spreading to other parts of the body.
According to a statement from Dr Nick Phin, deputy director of the PHE's National Infection Service, Nigeria faced a sustained outbreak of Monekypox in September 2017 and since then they have seen frequent one off cases.
Dr Phin added: 'It is likely monkeypox continues to circulate in Nigeria and could therefore affect travellers who are returning from this part of the world.
Besides medical staff, PHE said it was trying to contact passengers who were near the first patient on the flight to the UK.
Initial symptoms include "fever, headache, aching muscles, backache, swollen lymph nodes, chills and exhaustion", says the i news site.
"The trust is now supporting all staff who cared for the patient". However, the World Health Organization (WHO) advised against any restriction on travel in the area at the time as it said there was a "low risk" that worldwide travellers would come into contact with the infection. It is a rare disease caused by the monkeypox virus and has been reported mainly in central and west African countries.
"The symptoms of Monkeypox may last for two to four weeks, while the transmission is via direct contact with infected animals, human or contaminated materials".
PHE has said that, in most cases, the disease is a mild "self-limited" condition and those infected usually get better within a few weeks.
The monkeypox virus was first discovered in 1958 when outbreaks of a pox-like disease occurred in monkeys kept for research, says the United Kingdom government website's infectious diseases portal.
