Like the new Audi e-tron, which will offer a similar side camera mirror setup, but not in the USA due to regulatory obstacles, Lexus is only offering this system in its home market for now (European regulations also allow cameras as mirrors).
The system goes above and beyond by zooming out or enhancing each view depending on when you signal or put the auto in reverse. The views on the five-inch monitors located at the base of the A pillars can be manually enhanced by the driver. It will be the first mass-produced vehicle to get cameras and screens as wing mirrors - Volkswagen only made 250 units of the XL1 fuel economy special, and the Audi e-tron isn't out yet.
Because the camera pods are smaller than conventional mirrors, Lexus claims they will allow greater outward visibility, as well as reduce wind noise. The cameras also are shaped so that they won't be obscured by rain or snow.
The development of cars without conventional side view mirrors has been proposed for some time now due to their number of advantages.
