World leaders to attend Kofi Annan’s state funeral in Ghana

Nobel peace laureate Annan, who was the world body's first leader from sub-Saharan Africa, died aged 80 on August 18 after a short illness.

Annan began his career at the United Nations as a budget officer in Geneva and rose through the ranks to become head of finance in NY before his appointment as secretary-general in 1996.

Around 6,000 mourners packed the auditorium for Thursday's official service - the climax of a multi-day funeral ceremony, which has seen his coffin, draped in the Ghanaian national colors, displayed for public viewing.

He was also someone virtually anyone in the world could see themselves in: those on the far reaching of poverty or by, conflict and despair who found in him an ally; the junior United Nations staffers following in his footsteps; the young person to whom he said until his dying breath 'always remember, you are never too young to lead - and we are never too old to learn.

Speaking on behalf of the patrilineal family, spokesperson Georgina Darling Ofori said that they had lost a very important member of the family.

President Akufo-Addo said Annan "brought considerable renown to our country by this position and by his conduct and comportment in the global arena".

Many commuters in the capital wore black as a sign of respect.

Scores of world leaders past and present, as well as royalty, are expected in Accra for Annan's funeral.

She added: "Sorry folks there is no valid or a good argument in favor of inhumane treatment of both sides of the family and a best friend of 30 years".

A private burial service will then be held in the city's military cemetery.
