Storm Helene to bring wet and windy weather to Ireland

14 September 2018, 05:09 | Glen Norman

Winds of up to 80mph are forecast to hit Dumfries and Galloway from Monday night when the United Kingdom is battered by Storm Helene.

Hurricane Helene, which is brewing out in the Atlantic, is expected to hit the Azores islands on Saturday, and the effects should be felt on all the islands, especially the western ones, according to the Portuguese Met Office, the IPMA.

She is now one of a glut of tropical storms in the Atlantic, with Florence sparking mass evacuations as she heads towards landfall in the U.S. states of North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia.

There was also concern over crops. "It's going to be bad", said Woody White, chairman of the New Hanover County Commissioners. At least 1.7 million people in the Carolinas and Virginia have been warned to evacuate, and others are hunkering down.

However, it accepted there "remains large uncertainty in Helene's exact track".

However, it is not expected to bring the severe weather seen during Storm Ophelia last October, which caused widespread damage and left three people dead.

The hurricane is now moving north at around 20km/h, and was expected to slow down today, becoming a tropical storm.
