Two more USA service members have been identified from the 55 boxes of war remains that North Korea returned in July, officials said Monday.
"We have identified a couple of the remains, the families for the remains, coming out of Korea", Mattis told reporters Tuesday at the Pentagon.
The forensic teams have reportedly analyzed 23 of the 55 sets of remains, though some are more complete than others.
"The IDs will be made officially in the next couple of days", said John Byrd, the director of scientific analysis at the US Defence POW/MIA Accounting Agency.
Fifty-five boxes of human remains from the 1950-53 Korean War were handed over by the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) in late July, seen as a sign of progress after the historic Singapore meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and the DPRK's top leader Kim Jong Un.
The identifications will chip away at the 7,699 US troops who the USA military says remain unaccounted for from the Korean War.
Pentagon spokesman Colonel Rob Manning said the United Nations delegation was led by US Air Force Major General Michael Minihan, who is chief of staff for the Command that fought alongside South Korea's troops during the war. About 5,300 were lost in what is now North Korea. One set was identified as a tall black American.
Vice President Mike Pence spoke at the repatriation ceremony at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam in August, where he thanked the fallen soldiers for giving "the last full measure of devotion for their families, our freedom, our future, our country".
The condition of some of the remains is decidedly better than that of others.
The July transfer coincided with the 65th anniversary of the 1953 armistice that ended fighting between North Korean and Chinese forces and South Korean and USA -led forces under the U.N. Command. Jennie Jin and Byrd, who were the coordinators at the Korean War agency's Project, elaborated and said that the identification process is painstaking which also includes finding DNA from within the bone fragments.
