Hurricane Florence lashes U.S. east coast, triggers flood warnings

15 September 2018, 02:34 | Edward Lowe

"It's an uninvited brute who doesn't want to leave".

"I think I could survive a long time".

Florence had been a Category-3 hurricane on Thursday but dropped to Category-1 before coming ashore. Hurricane-force winds extended 80 miles (130 km/h) from its centre, and tropical-storm-force winds reached out to 195 miles (315 km/h).

The National Hurricane Center said a gauge north of Wilmington in Emerald Isle, North Carolina, reported 1.92 metres of inundation. Florence dumped more than 20 inches on Oriental, N.C., the NHC said.

"Our hearts go out to the families of those who died in this storm", Cooper said in a statement.

More than 440,000 homes and businesses were without power in North and SC early on Friday, utility officials said.

The North Carolina State Highway Patrol says that as the hurricane hit the coast overnight, officers "responded to 108 calls for service and 30 collisions".

The No. 1 mission right now, Cooper said, is to save lives.

The worst of the storm's fury had yet to reach coastal SC, where emergency managers said people could still leave flood-prone areas.

As Americans in North and SC begin to feel the effects of Hurricane Florence, The Weather Channel has reminded viewers of how unsafe storm surges can be.

Hurricane Florence's winds slap Carolina coast, flooding threat looms
For the first time since since 2008, the Atlantic has for named storms simultaneously. Florence could bring life-threatening storm surges, up to 13 feet.

- Authorities in the coastal city of New Bern were working with federal responders to rescue at least 150 residents who reported themselves stranded in Hurricane Florence's storm surge. The agency adds that people trapped by flooding should "never enter attics or crawl spaces".

The now Category 1 storm's intensity diminished as it neared land, with winds dropping to 90 miles per hour (135 kph) by nightfall.

Florence was seen as a major test for the Federal Emergency Management Agency, which was heavily criticized as slow and unprepared a year ago for Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico, where the storm was blamed for almost 3,000 deaths in the desperate aftermath. It will likely weaken more on Friday, with "rapid weakening forecast over the weekend", the hurricane center said.

Florence is one of four named storms in the Atlantic. But he expected to be able to ride the storm out. Forecasters said the onslaught could last for days, leaving a wide area under water from both heavy downpours and rising seas.

To prepare for this storm, businesses have been boarding up, and supplies have been readied for what is expected to be a large-scale relief operation. States of emergency have already been declared in both North and SC. Thousands of soldiers from their National Guard forces have been mobilized.
