Australia Will Keep Burning Coal To Produce Electricity Despite Stern IPCC Warning

How years compare with the 20th Century average

Animated chart showing that most of the coldest 10 years compared to the 20th century average were in the early 1900s while the warmest years have all been since 2000 with 2018 on course to be the fourth warmest year on record

That's one of the most pointed findings in a special report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), which was tasked with studying how a 2.0° Celsius rise in global temperature will affect the planet, its ecosystems and human communities, compared with a 1.5°C temperature increase. Leaders from countries such as Botswana and Namibia can not let-up on the global stage in pushing for nation states to make good on, and further improve, their pledges to cut greenhouse gas emissions in line with the Paris Agreement.

Caitlin Wiesen, UNDP Country Director for Vietnam, said the IPCC report noted that severe impacts of climate change could be avoidable by limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius, but time is running out.

Trump said he wanted to know more about who wrote the report. In section 1.3.2. of this chapter, Drivers of Impacts, the report states "Impacts may also be triggered by combinations of factors, including "impact cascades" through secondary consequences of changed systems". Australia's pledge is to cut 2005-level emissions 26-28 per cent by 2030, a target environmental groups such as the Climate Action Tracker describe as "insufficient". Current annual emissions are about 42 billion tonnes, implying about a decade of pollution before "the need to go vertical" to zero emissions to keep within the temperature limit.

In 2016 they were nearly twice that, and the Canadian government's current aim is to only cut to about 512 million tonnes a year.

The report has received a lukewarm response by Australia's center-right government.

Google unveils new Pixel smartphone at 10 media events around the world
Third-party manufacturers like Lenovo and JBL already make their own versions, complete with integrated camera for video calls. The entry-level Pixel 3 is $150 more expensive than last year's model, starting at $799, while the Pixel 3 XS starts at $899.

Environment Minister Catherine McKenna believes the report is another wake-up call that underscores why her government is pricing carbon and introducing regulations for the country's biggest emitters.

"My focus is making sure we actually do what we said we were going to do and then we can be more ambitious", McKenna said.

She says questions about phasing out coal should be instead be directed at the federal government, which will not renew or replace the Renewable Energy Target when it lapses in 2020.

"But high-tech nations will gain by advancing technology while the other nations will also benefit by receiving clean energy quicker".

Adam Bandt, the Greens climate spokesman, said the IPCC report showed it was "time to hit the climate emergency button", and that neither major party was prepared to take the necessary steps.

"We need the political leadership and the decisive action".

"I am not going to rule out things based on ideology", he told reporters in Sydney on Tuesday.

McCormack said he recognizes the concerns laid out in the IPCC report.

Crucial changes are needed - similar to the comprehensive economic reform that Vietnam started 40 years ago - to reduce GHG emissions and generate green jobs towards a resilient and sustainable society, she stated.
