Here is how Banksy shredded a painting worth £1million

The artist Banksy is known for elaborate hijinks, from masking his (or her) identity to his latest destructive, headline-grabbing stunt that's now driving up the price of an already expensive artwork. I think it would have been amusing for them to actively encourage people to shred their Banksy pieces, consequently increasing the value for the people not gullible enough to cut up their rare artwork with kitchen scissors. Art experts are now saying the half-destroyed work could be worth up to double as much as intact copies.

"The successful bidder was a private collector, bidding through a Sotheby's staff member on the phone".

The auction house added: "We had no prior knowledge of this event and were not in any way involved".

The video then jumped to clips of Friday's auction at Sotheby's, indicating that Banksy - or someone who works with him - was there when it happened.

Is the "destroyed" Banksy work now even more valuable?

Dettori repeats Arc de Triomphe success on flying Enable
Alleged won the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe in 1977, then went back and won it again in 1978. Had his challenge come off it would have been ride of the century, let alone the year.

The owner of a mint copy of the now infamous Banksy print Girl with Balloon, reportedly worth £40,000, jumped the gun in an attempt to further increase its value - but only succeeded in making their print worthless.

He has made his marks on cities around the world with politically themed paintings. A pre-torn canvas rolled out from behind the one in front that is rolled up behind itself.

A year later, he released an inflatable doll dressed as a Guantánamo Bay prisoner at Disneyland in California.

That 40-inch-high example, "acquired directly from the artist by the present owner in 2006", according to the Sotheby's catalogue, set a new auction high for a work exclusively created by Banksy.

Active since the early 90s, there have been dozens of theories about Banksy's identity. Do as Banksy says, but not as Banksy does. or something.

In 2017, Bristol DJ Goldie seemed to slip up during an interview and name Massive Attack member Robert Del Naja as Banksy.

Del Naja is known to have been a graffiti artist before becoming a musician - best known as a founding member of Massive Attack. On Saturday, Daily Mail noted the similarity between the person identified as Gunningham 10 years ago and a man taking a cellphone video in the Sotheby's salesroom Friday.

A post on Banksy's official Instagram account showed the moment - and the shocked reaction of those in the room - with the words "Going, going, gone".

Internet sleuths located another image of the incident, showing a man with a camera phone videoing it. The shredder was obviously equipped with a remote device, which the artist hit as soon as the painting sold.

"That's the ironic part about it", Leon Benrimon, the director of modern and contemporary art at Heritage Auctions, tells MONEY.
