Google unveils new Pixel smartphone at 10 media events around the world

Google unveils new Pixel smartphone at 10 media events around the world

The entry-level Pixel 3 is $150 more expensive than last year's model, starting at $799, while the Pixel 3 XS starts at $899.

Once again Verizon is the "exclusive" carrier for the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL in the U.S. That's, of course, a bit of a misnomer because that exclusivity only reaches as far as buying from a carrier goes.

The new Pixel Slate tablet runs Google's beefier Chrome OS laptop operating system rather than Android and is priced at $599, putting it in competition with Apple's iPad Pro tablet series.

That first impression will likely fade into the background once you get your hands on this phone, because the texture from that "soft touch" rear imparts a feeling of quality. If you press that screen button, the Pixel's AI will answer and start asking questions of the caller on your behalf. The device will give you "rich, visual" answers in response, and if you ask it to show you something - the example Google gives is cutting a pineapple - it can automatically pull up an appropriate YouTube video for you. The Pixel 3 is $150 more than the Pixel 2, and the 3 XL is $50 more than the 2 XL. It measures 5.5 inches on the diagonal, with curved corners and first impressions of this display are good: it looks punchy, viewing angles seem good and there's plenty of vibrancy. What's important is that the ppi - pixels per inch - remains high so that the display is capable of showing fine details. At the very least, they both offer the convenience of wireless charging.

There is a Snapdragon 845 chipset under the hood of both phones but the cores are clocked at 2.5GHz and not 2.7GHz or even 2.96GHz as we have seen on other phones with the same chipset. Numerous new AI-powered features on Pixel, including camera features like Top Shot, Photobooth, and Lens suggestions, are processed on-device. What we can talk about are the specs, design and the new features that are inside the device.

Nikki Haley Resigns as US Ambassador to United Nations
Ambassador Nikki Haley looks on at the United Nations Global Call to Action on the World Drug Problem during the 73rd U.N. Trump said he was considering candidates to replace Haley, and would name her successor in the next two or three weeks.

While most phones have some form of call screening, Google today announced its Duplex AI would do even more to save you from having to deal with pesky telemarketers.

A Google Home Hub, Slate and Pixel 3 phone are pictured in an undated handout photo. Whether that matters to you or not probably depends on how much you crave the latest hardware.

The Pixel 3 and 3 XL will be available officially in 13 countries, including several new ones. The Pixel 3 has a 2,915mAh battery, while the XL's is 3,430mAh; both support wireless charging.

And alleged images of the product have emerged ahead of its presumed launch via About Chromebooks that showed an unannounced piece of hardware with a keyboard accessory attached.

What's really new here is the Top Shot mode that Google is bubbling up to the surface. Night Sight lets you take fantastic night photos without the need for flash.

Huawei Mate 20 hits AnTuTu and Weibo
Under the hood, the device will come powered by the in-house HiSilicon Kirin 980 octa-core processor built on 7nm FinFET process. The renders suggest that the smartphone features a full 6.43-inch TFT LCD with 2244 x 1080 pixels resolution.

Another addition is the ability to change the "aperture" in portrait shots. Claimed to bring the best of Google to its users, the two phones are powered by AI for more helpful, thoughtful, and personal experiences. Third-party manufacturers like Lenovo and JBL already make their own versions, complete with integrated camera for video calls. There's the regular 8-megapixel selfie camera that's now joined by a second wide-angle front camera.

First impressions suggest this is going to be a lot of fun - and there's a drastic difference between the regular front camera and that wide view.

The Pixel phones are among the best Android phones because they control the end-to-end user experience, pairing the best hardware with the best software.

Previous leaks said the Pixel 3 would be available for preorder right after Google's event on Tuesday in all the countries where Google is holding local events, including the US, UK, and France, but also in other global markets.
