All eyes are on Hurricane Michael. Will it have an impact on Maine

"We have a pit in our stomachs", National Hurricane Center Director Ken Graham said on Wednesday morning discussing the storm's approach on the Weather Channel.

Georgia Governor Nathan Deal declared a state of emergency on Tuesday for 92 counties in his state.

"We've told those who stayed to have their life jackets on when the storm comes", Tress Dameron, Franklin County emergency management coordinator, told The News Herald in Panama City. "There are warnings for more than 300 miles (480km) of coastline", the National Weather Service tweeted, predicting that Michael would become a "large and risky hurricane".

The unexpected brute quickly sprang from a weekend tropical depression and grew swiftly into what could be one of the Panhandle's worst hurricanes in history, with destructive wind, up to a foot of rain and a life-threatening storm surge of up to 13 feet.

The National Hurricane Center called Michael "potentially catastrophic" and "extremely unsafe".

The storm surge in some places in Florida could reach more than 10 feet, the NHC warned.

Florida's Panhandle, from Pensacola to Apalachicola, and its Big Bend area are the zones of greatest concern.

Mr Scott warned that he may order more evacuations due to the size of the potential storm surge.

On Tuesday, Mr Scott said he activated 2500 Florida National Guard troops in preparation for the storm.
