Pixel 3 and 3 XL launch: any surprises are on the inside
The Pixel Watch would be the culmination of everything the computing giant has learned since Android Wear launched back in 2014, Google was expected to roll up its sleeves and get stuck into the smartwatch market on its own terms, going watchface-to-watchface with Apple and Samsung.
The Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL phones offer significant upgrades to prior models by adding a almost edge-to-edge screen on the larger model, more display area on both phones, faster processors and an improved camera. The Pixel 3 XL has a 6.3 inch display, but it also has a notch while Samsung does not.
Something different from a year ago is the ability to wirelessly charge Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL. Both devices run on a Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor with 4GB of memory. There is no microSD card slot, nor is there a headphone jack, but the Pixels now have wireless Qi charging and they're IP68-rated for water resistance. Gboard, the keyboard built into your Pixel 3, will recommend GIFs, stickers and more, to make your conversations fun and engaging.
The fronts of the phones now have two separate cameras: an 8MP 28mm f/1.8 (35mm equiv.) standard one and an 8MP 19mm f/2.2 (35mm equiv.) wide-angle one. The phone has a custom chip created to make photos look better, Google said. Instead, the camera features a number of new software tools to help you capture better photographs more reliably.
"At 12.3" the Pixel Slate is not a device you can hold in one hand for prolonged time. Smart Compose suggests phrases in your emails so that you can draft them faster, on the go. It's still powered by a micro USB connection, so there is no Type-C just yet. It's available in up to 256GB of storage and starts at $US599 ($846).
Pixel Slate Marks Google’s Return To Tablets But Without Android
The nod to privacy concerns comes as Google and other big USA tech companies try to bounce back from recent data breach scandals. The Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL will be the first Pixel phones to launch in France at the same time as the US, FrAndroid explains.
No Android here, unfortunately, but it does look like Google's crafted something pretty remarkable. The other products included the Pixel Slate and a Home Hub. It features an Ambient EQ mode, which dims the screensaver depending on the time of day so that it's never blaring in your face. The primary aim of the Hub is to control your smart home with a single device.
We couldn't do a fair comparison without looking at the specific apps and services available on each device. It comes in three colors-Chalk, Charcoal, Aqua, and Sand. Google has kept thing simple with the design of Pixel 3 and it works.
Google initially sold the Pixel 2 and its larger sibling, Pixel 2 XL, in six countries, including the United States, Australia, Germany and India, after an unveiling in San Francisco.
Google is touting the Pixel Slate as a productivity machine, which is a claim a lot of 2-in-1s make.
Not to mention, the company quietly released a new version of the Chromecast dongle with support for multi-room audio in sync with other Google smart devices. It's an OLED display, as it was past year, and it fills much of the front of the phone. With every other major smartphone manufacturer on the planet opting for dual- and, in some cases, triple-camera setups, Google must have plenty of confidence that its HDR+ algorithm will be able to deliver the goods once again. With many different tricks, such as Top Shot, Super Res Zoom, and Night Sight, all of which enhance your photos through software alone, the third generation of Pixel phones has a strong camera game.
When it ships later this year, the $599 Pixel Slate will come with a significantly redesigned version of Google's Chrome operating system. The album updates with each relevant file uploaded from your camera roll.
The iPhone also features Google's search engine, but Google may be paying Apple as much as $9 billion annually for that privilege, based on the estimates of Goldman Sachs analyst Rod Hall.
Of course, we'll be fully testing the Pixel 3 for stamina closer to launch and we'll bring you the full results.
