The fiery blast happened Tuesday in Prince George, British Columbia, shutting down the Enbridge natural gas pipeline about 600 miles northeast of Vancouver.

No one was hurt when the fireball lit up the sky near the community of Shelley, and forced about 100 members of the nearby Lheidli T'enneh First Nation from their homes.

"No FortisBC infrastructure has been damaged as a result of the incident affecting Enbridge's transmission pipeline".

The explosion involved an Enbridge natural gas pipeline, according to RCMP, and the gas supply has been shut down.

We have not been contacted or asked to reduce our usage at this time, which would be standard practice through our agreement with the company", she said.

Enbridge continues to investigate the cause of the explosion. "The most significant impact right now is what we are doing in terms of precautions", said B.C. Minister of Energy Michelle Mungall.

The company will update its customers as soon as it is in a position to offer something new, said Stout.

In an updated statement issued on Wednesday afternoon, FortisBC said there had so far been a reduction in natural gas use of about 20 per cent provincewide, but that further cuts are needed.

"It's really grown in the last four years or so", he said, noting Fortis has told him they have connected more homes in Victoria in the last year to natural gas than in any other year.
