Google concedes $10bn Pentagon Jedi data contract amid ethical concerns

While it will still work with the military, the guidelines would prohibit the use of AI in weaponry.

The decision to back out of Project Maven occurred after thousands of employees signed a petition asking the company to stop working with the military, with numerous employees resigning in protest.

The tech giant has made the of the the Pentagon's competition for a possible $10 billion cloud-computing project. The protest was filed with the Government Accountability Office (GAO) days before the bidding process closes.

Pakistan’s currency plunges as it seeks International Monetary Fund loan
The IMF notes that the market impact of escalating trade disputes has been limited to specific sectors. But China's involvement could also bring potential risks, he said.

In a statement to Bloomberg, the Tech Workers Coalition said that "sustained" pressure from employees opposed to Google involvement in JEDI showed workers "have significant power, and are increasingly willing to use it". A dozen people resigned before Google pledged to ditch Project Maven but "continue our work with governments and the military". The company later said it would entirely ban the development of AI software that can be used in weapons systems. The Pentagon already offers "dozens" of individual clouds, many of them built in secret to enable classified military programs.

The department also said it expects "to maintain contracts with numerous cloud providers to access specialized capabilities not available under the JEDI Cloud contract". Amazon has said it favors the single-cloud approach for the JEDI contract.

Google says it chose not to compete for the contract because it believes this work would conflict with its corporate principles, and because it believes it may not hold all of the necessary certifications.

Brent crude drops below $83 on expectations Iran will maintain some exports
Saudi Arabia had previously claimed it had successfully replaced Iranian crude oil supplies lost through United States sanctions. It had planned to import 9 MT of Iranian oil in 2018-19 financial year or 0.75 MT a month. "So let us see how it evolves".

The bids for the $10 billion Department of Defense cloud computing contract are due by the end of the week, and Microsoft laid out its case for that business Tuesday in a blog post that highlighted its ability to secure the most sensitive government applications. For its part, IBM argued that the Pentagon's approach would only weaken its cyber defense.

Amazon and Microsoft are the industry's cloud market leaders.

"Had the JEDI contract been open to multiple vendors, we would have submitted a compelling solution for portions of it", a Google spokesperson said. Competitors are anxious that Amazon has an inside track to the JEDI award because it has been the CIA's primary cloud provider for years and because the Pentagon's request for proposals includes highly specific requirements that only Amazon is likely to meet. It takes time to win the trust of federal regulators tasked with evaluating these services, and both Microsoft and Amazon Web Services have been working with government customers for several years on obtaining the relevant certifications.
