Twins’ Sano will not face charges for incident in DR

Minnesota Twins third baseman Miguel Sano walks back to the dugout after striking out against the Texas Rangers during the eighth inning of a baseball game Saturday Sept. 1 2018 in Arlington Texas

On Sunday morning, he was involved in a serious incident in which he reportedly hit a police officer with his truck, but the good news is that he'll be getting off the hook.

Police said in a statement that the third baseman was released from custody after striking the officer with his auto, leaving him with a broken leg outside a nightclub in San Pedro de Macoris early Sunday.

The Spanish-language El Nuevo Diario reported that the police officer sustained a broken left leg in the incident and was hospitalized. The two know each other, according to Duran, and attended school together. In an attempt to leave the scene, Sano ran over the officer's foot, breaking his fibula and tibia, the report said.

Sano is said to have hit a police offer after driving through a checkpoint outside a nightclub.

According to a police report posted online, Sano and his wife were in a vehicle that didn't have license plates and were stopped after leaving a nightclub. Sano was detained by police for several hours after the accident, but the officer who was injured "declared that the accident was not intentional".

"The citizen, Miguel Sano, was sent today to the traffic court to comply with the due process in these types of cases", said Duran.

Sano is coming off a shortened season after injuring his surgically repaired left leg. "Neither the agent nor the national police plan to charge Sano with anything". The facts of the incident are not completely available right now, but the club is in the process of gathering as much information as possible.

The infielder was under investigation earlier this year after he was accused of sexual assault in December. After missing most of the year with a hamstring problem and struggling upon returning to the big leagues, Sano went back to the Dominican Republic in the offseason to be with his family.
