Xbox One October System Software Update Rolling Out; Brings New Avatars and More
First of all, we get the brand new avatars that Microsoft has been testing for a while, with a renewed look and a lot of options.
One of the notable new features in the update is support for Amazon's Alexa voice assistant, which can be enabled via a skill.
The new Xbox Avatars are expressive, creative and, most importantly, bring to life the community of fans they represent. You can now choose to have your Xbox Avatar across your entire Xbox One profile and console, and even use it as your gamerpic. You can download the new Xbox Avatar Editor from the link below, let us know in the comments if you managed to create something that better reflects your gamer identity.
These new updates are immensely powerful, with more than 16 million color options for nearly all the Avatar items.
Through the new Xbox Skill for Alexa, you can now use voice commands to power on/off their console, adjust volume, launch games and apps, start and stop broadcasts on Mixer, capture screenshots, and more. The new Avatar Store will allow you to buy new Avatar items, including licensed designs from Halo, Gears of War, and more. Keep in mind the new Xbox Skill is only available for users in the United States, so if you are outside of the U.S., you are only getting the new Xbox Avatars, Dolby Vision streaming, and new langauges for Narrator. To learn more about this new feature, see our previous post.
Microsoft is really focusing on Alexa here for the Xbox Skill, so much so that Microsoft is even launching a new deal for the Xbox One X and the Xbox One S where customers can get a free Amazon Echo Dot while supplies last. Similar to technologies like HDR+, Dolby Vision offers dynamic HDR based on the scene, while standard HDR is the same throughout the movie or TV show that you're watching.
Dolby Vision is supported by select TVs made in 2017 and 2018 by LG, Sony, and Funai.
Xbox is committed to being more accessible and inclusive.
Microsoft is adding five additional languages to Narrator on Xbox One, including Spanish, Portuguese, Polish, Swedish, and Dutch. An Australian version of English language for Narrator is also being added. The feature update is version 1810, while its Windows 10 counterpart was version 1809.
These updates are available because of the Xbox Insiders who have helped shape these features, so big thanks to all of you for your valuable input.
Open the Settings app on Xbox One. Until then, enjoy the October Update and happy gaming!
