He did not provide a reason in his resignation letter, but praised the president for their work together. He said the resignation came at "your request".

It appeared to be part of a summer 2017 campaign by Whitaker - then reportedly on the shortlist to replace Don McGahn as White House counsel - to portray himself as a hardliner on the Mueller probe.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer was in the middle of giving his post-election spiel to reporters when the news broke of Attorney General Jeff Sessions' firing.

President Donald Trump announced Wednesday afternoon that Jeff Sessions is out as Attorney General, with Sessions' chief of staff Matthew Whitaker taking his place until a new permanent AG is selected and confirmed.

"[Whitaker] will serve our Country well", Trump tweeted.

He also complained that the Justice Department's criminal prosecution of two GOP House members could hurt Republicans' chance to maintain the majority.

Trump and Sessions have clashed since the 2017 inauguration.

The departure creates uncertainty at the Justice Department, but also for special counsel Robert Mueller's office, which is investigating allegations of Russian interference in the United States election that delivered a Trump White House.

Mr. Sessions defended his tenure.
