Two buildings collapsed

Prosecutors said the bodies of two men and a woman were found separately under the 15-metre pile of rubble on Rue d'Aubagne, a narrow shopping street which now resembles the scene of an natural disaster. An adjoining third building, number 67, sustained damage and was torn down for fear it would collapse, as well.

The first victim - a man - was pulled from the wreckage earlier on Tuesday, prosecutor Xavier Tarabeux said, adding that he needed to be identified.

At least three people have died from the collapse of two buildings in the French port city of Marseille, fire officials said Tuesday.

Only one of the buildings, number 65, was occupied.

A local resident, Toufik Ben Rhouma, blamed Marseille city hall for the disaster.

Rotating strikes for Canada Post hit Toronto
In recent years, said Hamilton, the corporation's parcel deliveries have seen double-digit yearly increases. So far, 90 communities have been hit with the rotating strikes since they began October 22, said Hamilton.

The search has proven hard because one of the collapsed buildings, 63 Rue d'Aubagne, was closed and was possibly used by squatters.

Google Maps images taken in recent months showed the collapsed buildings had large visible cracks in their facades.

"The most important is saving lives", Castaner added from the scene.

One of those thought dead includes a mother who did not collect her daughter from school on the day of the incident, and another woman who rarely left her apartment.

Several people are still missing.

"The walls had been moving for several weeks and cracks had appeared", the 25-year-old philosophy student said.

"I haven't had any news", he said, wandering among the rescuers.

Marseille city council has evacuated and rehoused 100 residents from neighbouring buildings and says heavy rain may have contributed to the collapse.

The neighbourhood is home to many buildings in a similarly dilapidated condition, some of them run by slum landlords.

The buildings were in a small shopping street in the centre of the city. In 2011 the local authorities began a plan to renovate the city centre, but a 2015 government report suggested that 100,000 Marseille residents were living in housing risky to their health or security.
