Another fact that makes Sharice Davids win both unique and liberating is that she identifies as a lesbian; which also makes her the first openly LGBT member of Congress from Kansas.

Kansas Democrat Sharice Davids made history on Tuesday by becoming not only the state's first openly gay woman of Congress but also the first Native American person elected on Tuesday. Davids, who once tried out for "The Ultimate Fighter 20", defeated David Yoder to capture the Kansas City seat, the first time a Democrat has won the spot in a decade. "We know there are so many of us who welcome everyone, who see everyone and who know that everyone should have the opportunity to succeed".

Davids is a member of the Ho-Chunk Nation and Haaland is an enrolled member of the Pueblo of Laguna, according to their respective campaigns. Davids was 1-1 as a pro and 5-1 as an amateur in MMA.
