Further inquiries indicate it is possible another child, the 12-year-old boy, was a passenger in the vehicle.
"A formal identification of the child is yet to be undertaken and as such, police are unable to confirm it is the body of the 12-year-old boy believed to be a passenger in the vehicle and reported missing late last night", police said in a statement.
The bodies of a man and a woman, both aged 19, and their three-year-old son were found 4.5km away from their broken-down auto on Wednesday. According to local media, there's reports the young family may have died from exposure.
The alarm was raised by a person at Willowra Health Clinic just before 12.30pm on Wednesday and authorities attended the scene on Jarra Jarra Access rd - 62 kilometres away from Willowra - later that same day.
"One of the avenues we are looking at is that they have walked off from a vehicle in extreme weather and may have got caught out", superintendent Shaun Gill told the Australian broadcaster ABC.
"He will be a critical part of the investigation".
'This does serve, unfortunately, as a timely reminder for anyone travelling on NT roads to ensure that when you travel your vehicle is in a fit state, that you have sufficient supplies including water and a first aid kit, and that someone is aware of what your travel itinerary is - when you intend to leave, arrive and your anticipated routes, ' he said.
This morning, police said a 12-year-old boy, who they believed was with the group, was not found among the dead.
Police are appealing to members within those communities to contact police immediately on 131 444 should they locate or have information on the child's whereabouts.
