Trump frames midterms as ‘tremendous success’

08 November 2018, 11:00 | Silvia Roy

As of this writing, not every race has been called and it is not yet clear how large the Democrats' majority will be, but it is already clear that the Speaker's gavel, and control of the House investigative committees, will go to them.

Representative Nancy Pelosi, who is likely to return as speaker of the House despite opposition from some centrist Democrats, promised that the party will serve as a counterweight - but also work with Trump.

The GOP's successes were fueled by a coalition that's decidedly older, whiter, more male and less likely to have college degrees. Today, his chances for re-election look much more hard than they did just a few months ago.

Democrats needed to pick up two dozen seats to seize the House majority and two seats to control the Senate.

This year's midterms included a lot of firsts: Jared Polis became the first openly gay man elected governor; Sharice Davids and Debra Haaland the first Native American women elected to Congress; and Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib, the first Muslim women in Congress.

Exit polling showed that voters, like Democratic candidates, considered health care the number one issue and they turned out in record numbers. A margin of less than half a percentage point automatically triggers a recount.

Democrats seize US House in rebuke to Trump
But she added: "A Democratic Congress will work for solutions that bring us together, because we have all had enough of division". Despite his party losing the House, Trump wrote on Twitter , "Tremendous success tonight".

Democrats celebrated a handful of victories in their "blue wall" Midwestern states, electing or re-electing governors in Michigan, Pennsylvania, Minnesota and in Wisconsin, where Scott Walker was defeated by state education chief Tony Evers. Democrats flippedseats in suburban districts outside of Washington, Philadelphia, Miami, Chicago and Denver. More women than ever were running, along with veterans and minorities, many of them motivated by revulsion over Trump. For the first time in the nation's history there will be more than 100 women in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Trump, well aware of the Democratic intentions to investigate his personal taxes, which he has repeatedly declined to divulge, possible business connections with the government he oversees, and his administration's policies, assailed the looming Democratic-led House probes and the Mueller investigation on Twitter even as he boasted about Republican Senate candidates who ousted Democratic incumbents.

If Democrats demand the returns and Mr Trump refuses to release them, it could set off a series of legal challenges, with federal judges being asked to adjudicate the limits of the President's power. Right after the election results were called, Trump tweeted a short message: "Tremendous success tonight".

But network projections said that Democrats would take control of the House for the first time in eight years, upending the balance of power in Washington where Trump enjoyed an easy ride following his shock 2016 election with Republican dominance of both chambers.

Democrats' dreams of the Senate majority, always unlikely, were shattered after losses in top Senate battlegrounds: Indiana, Missouri, Tennessee, North Dakota and Texas.

Some hurt worse than others.

A woman holds a sign during a rally in Chicago to inspire voter turnout ahead of the November 6 midterm elections in the United States. From suburban House districts where voters rebelled, to red states where they rallied behind him, Trump remained the center of the storm.

Democrats were most optimistic about the House, a sprawling battlefield set largely in America's suburbs where more educated and affluent voters in both parties have soured on Trump's turbulent presidency, despite the strength of the national economy.

The Republican leader has previously said relatively little about his willingness to craft legislation to address high drug prices, despite the Trump administration's ongoing focus on the issue.

House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi is hailing "a new day in America".

The bottom line is that Trump is facing a new and formidable apparatus of accountability - and even he knows how badly this could end for him.

Kobach had built a national profile as an advocate of tough immigration policies and strict voter photo ID laws.

He noted that former President Obama lost a net 63 House seats in the 2010 midterm election and former President Bill Clinton lost 54 in the 1994 midterm election, but Trump only lost less than 30 seats.
