He was a fantastic player for England and it's fine by me if we want to celebrate his achievements.

Gareth Southgate will stick with the youngsters when naming his England squad for next week's games against the United States and Croatia despite his decision to endorse the controversial recall of Wayne Rooney.

Rooney is to come out of global retirement to make his 120th and final England appearance against the United States at Wembley on November 15.

He said: "I like Wayne, I get on well with him and his record speaks for itself".

Former Everton and United forward Rooney scored 53 goals in 119 England appearances.

Rooney's England return - farce or fitting tribute?

"But I can understand why some people might think it makes the game a bit of a circus - and England have got an important game (a crucial Nations League decider against Croatia) three days later".

"He's a threat in terms of running in behind defences", said Southgate.

On Wilson's call-up, Southgate said: 'Wilson has been involved in high number of goals this season, in goals and assists, so this is a good opportunity for us to look at him.

The English meedja have been busy wringing their hands over the whole event, with numerous country's Top Football Writers decrying Her Majesty's Southgate's decision to dole out an easy cap, a move supposedly at odds with England's new era.

England's record appearance-maker is former keeper Peter Shilton, with 125 appearances for his country.

"The value of caps is very hard to be precise on", said Southgate. It's a great experience to have for the younger players in our team.

"I hope Wayne gets the appropriate response, because he's been a tremendous servant".

"Everyone should get right behind it and give him a great send-off".

Rooney, a record goalscorer for both Manchester United and England, retired from global football in August 2017.
