Police sergeant one year from retirement among California shooting victims after 'going in to save lives'
Several people inside the Borderline Bar and Grill in Thousand Oaks, Calif., were also at the Route 91 music festival last October, when gunman Stephen Paddock killed 58 and injured hundreds of others. At least 12 people were killed.
Mr Dean said his department had several previous contacts with the former Marine including a call to his home in April, when deputies found him acting in an irate and irrational manner.
Long reportedly shot a bouncer or security guard outside and forced his way into the bar, witnesses said. Each moment was captured by TV cameras and broadcast live on cable networks as Americans grappled with another mass shooting.
When the Las Vegas gunman opened fire from a 32nd-floor hotel room, Kelly said he threw a friend to the ground before helping get her out of the area and into a room.
The sheriff said Helus told her, "Hey I gotta go handle a call".
"But unfortunately, you go into the unknown, you know there's shots being fired, obviously the suspect was in there and ready for him", he said.
Ventura County Sheriff Geoff Dean named the suspect as Ian Long, aged 28. A highway patrolman pulled him out and waited for scores of other officers to converge on the bar.
"Ron was a hardworking, dedicated sheriff's sergeant who was totally committed", Dean said, "and tonight, as I told his wife, he died a hero because he went in to save lives".
"I have nothing to believe there is any terrorism link but we will certainly look at that option", he said.
Long used a.45 caliber Glock handgun, which was purchased legally, Dean said. But Dean said the gun had an extended magazine that is illegal in California.
"We have not found any type of assault rifle inside the location", he said.
Dean said he did not know of his motive.
Twelve people were killed, including Helus.
Attorney General Jeff Sessions Resigns
The department confirmed he would be assuming oversight of the Mueller probe from Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein. His recusal was one of his first public acts as attorney-general.
Helus is survived by his wife and son.
Reports said there were around a 100 patrons inside the nightclub when the shooting began.
Authorities have not released numerous victims' names but among those who have been confirmed are three men and one woman.
The gunman also died at the scene, though it was not immediately clear how.
President Donald Trump said in a tweet Thursday morning that he was "fully briefed" on the shooting.
Located around 40 miles west of Los Angeles, Thousand Oaks was recently ranked as one of the country's safest cities.
As soon as the first round of bullets rang out at the Borderline Bar and Grill, Matt Wennerstrom sprung into action, grabbing a bar stool and throwing it through a window to free people to safety.
Paul Pogba welcomes Manchester United underdogs tag
Lukaku's injury means he is a doubt for Sunday's trip to Manchester City, so Sanchez might get another outing at the Etihad. He added: "I think it's always good to be the outsider, so people expect bad of us and then we surprise people".
Titans defeat Cowboys Monday night
Prescott is under contract through 2019, but the Cowboys can begin negotiations on an extension after this season if they choose. The coaching staff has to understand the strengths of each player on the team and learn how to play off of it.
