Democrats and Republicans warn White House against impeding Russia inquiry as Trump replaces Sessions with ally
Stone's visits to Trump Tower in NY before the 2016 election. "There's no collusion", Trump said on Wednesday.
Trump blamed the recusal for the appointment of Mueller, who took over the Russian Federation investigation two months later and began examining whether Trump's hectoring of Sessions was part of a broader effort to obstruct the probe.
Democratic Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer immediately called on Whitaker to recuse himself from the probe as his predecessor had, "given his previous comments advocating defunding and imposing limitations" on it.
To this point, Trump has heeded advice not to directly interfere, though a new chapter in the relationship with the probe may have begun with the appointment of Matthew Whitaker as new acting attorney general.
"He wants a political crony to protect him from the investigation of his own campaign", she said.
"He worships him", a longtime friend said of Whitaker and Trump.
If Whitaker made a decision to fire Mueller, he would need to inform the special counsel in writing of the specific reason for his termination.
Mueller, who had reported to Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, now reports to the interim attorney general.
"I believe myself to have been a reasonable prosecutor, and when the facts and evidence show a criminal violation has been committed, the individuals involved should not dictate whether the case is prosecuted", Whitaker wrote in a 2016 op-ed for USA Today.
He found satisfaction in being able to reverse Obama-era policies that conservatives say flouted the will of Congress, encouraging prosecutors to pursue the most serious charges they could and promoting more aggressive enforcement of federal marijuana law. Justice Department officials said his taking over for his boss was, at the very least, "awkward", because chiefs of staff typically leave with the attorney general.
There is some question whether Sessions was sacked or resigned.
Whitaker is expected to assume oversight of Mueller's Russian Federation investigation.

But Paul Rosenzweig, a former senior counsel to independent counsel Kenneth Starr, said he thought such a lawsuit would be unlikely to succeed because the US Supreme Court has said the president has wide latitude to fire executive branch officials.
The special counsel has also been investigating whether Mr Comey's firing amounted to obstruction of justice.
Robert Mueller's investigation is probing allegations of Russian interference in the 2016 campaign.
There have been rumors that Graham was being considered for the attorney general job.
The protests come a day after Trump effectively fired Attorney General Jeff Sessions, a move many see as clearing the way for Trump to go after Mueller.
Even after he arrived at the Justice Department, Whitaker harbored frustration about the length of the special counsel probe and doubts about the scope of Mueller's authority, a person familiar with the matter said.
