People are angry a radio station is refusing to play one Christmas carol. Offbeat Dodgy Christmas carol gets axed
A radio station in Cleveland has chose to stop playing the popular holiday song "Baby, It's Cold Outside", citing listener concerns about predatory undertones in the lyrics.
The song has been deemed a "date rape anthem" as it is essentially about a man not understanding the concept of 'no, ' and trying to convince a woman to stay with him even though she keeps protesting.
The duet was written by Frank Loesser in 1944 and has been recorded by artists such as Bing Crosby, Doris Day, Dean Martin, Lady Gaga, Zooey Deschanel, Michael Bublé, Idinia Menzel, Ray Charles and Dolly Parton.
Trump seeks Imran Khan's help on Taliban talks
The Pakistani leader insisted his country was being made "a scapegoat" for US military "failures" in Afghanistan. Khan hit back by saying the United States should not blame Pakistan for its failings in Afghanistan.
"The world we live in is extra sensitive now, and people get easily offended, but in a world where #MeToo has finally given women the voice they deserve, the song has no place", he said.
While the lyrics use phrases such as "What's in this drink?" to refer to decisions made under the influence of alcohol, many have begun to view this song under a modern light, where such phrases and ideas could be considered inappropriate for pushing boundaries of consent.
"If you want to be outraged, be outraged about what the song is actually about - the double standard in regards to sex that women face and how nothing much has changed", she tweeted. In that poll, 94 percent of respondents said the song was a Christmas classic and that the station should continue playing the song.
More than 5,000 people have voted since the station launched the poll on their Facebook page on 29 November. "I really can't stay", she sings, to which he responds, "But baby, it's cold outside".
The station's afternoon host Glenn Anderson admitted in a blog post on WDOK's website that he initially didn't understand how the lines could be an issue "until I read them". "I'm glad my husband and I will be enjoying it on our holiday playlist". After years of performing the song, he sold the song to MGM studios which used the song in the 1949 romantic comedy "Neptune's Daughter".
