Holiday song Baby It's Cold Outside axed because of 'inappropriate lyrics'
04 December 2018, 11:56 | Elsie Buchanan
CBS reports, "STAR 102.1 posted on their website that listeners complained that the song's lyrics are inappropriate so the station says they made a decision to stop playing the song".
"I simply must go (But baby it's cold outside)", "The answer is no (But baby it's cold outside)", and perhaps most controversially: "Say what's in this drink?"
But some people apparently got confused, and that has "led to misdirected complaints" to "Kansas City's Christmas Station", which has no plans to yank "Baby, It's Cold Outside" from its all-holiday song rotation, set to run through December 25.
MLB Rumors: Phillies trading for Jean Segura
Segura and his teammates were exchanged for first baseman Carlos Santana and shortstop J.P. Segura is owed $60 million through the 2022 season. "That's how winning teams are made".
But concerned listeners have been calling out the song for several years over its apparent sinister message behind the songs lyrics.
Why: Glenn Anderson, a host for the radio station that banned the song, said the lyrics felt "manipulative and wrong".
Apparently the song has been subject to scrutiny for years, even prior to the #MeToo movement which Mr Anderson cited in his explanation.
Comedian and writer Jen Kirkman explained how the song may not be about a man persuading a woman to stay and have sex with him, but rather how a woman's reputation will suffer if she wants to stay, and does. But one of her lines, "Say, what's in this drink?" jumps out in this time of powerful men like Bill Cosby having to pay the consequences of sexual assault.
"We don't erase our grandparents for having different views, we tell them what is and isn't acceptable anymore".
"Baby It's Cold Outside", which was written by "Guys and Dolls" songwriter Frank Loesser in 1944, was not suitable in the age of #MeToo, said the station's hosts in Cleveland Ohio. Loesser later sold the song to MGM for use in 1949's Neptune's Daughter, in which the song plays seriously between Esther Williams and Ricardo Montalban, and gender-swapped for humor between Betty Garrett and Red Skelton.
