Everyone is digging Tom Cruise’s PSA about motion smoothing

05 December 2018, 10:13 | Elsie Buchanan

Something is keeping movie star Tom Cruise up at night: motion smoothing.

Motion smoothing, or interpolation, is a technique that artificially adds additional frames to the moving image in order to prevent blurring - most effective when watching sport.

Sometimes known as the "soap opera effect", McQuarrie acknowledged that many people notice something "strange" about the film they're watching with the feature enabled but few can identify the issue specifically without a side-by-side comparison.

Journalist and news editor. "If you look up from your cell phone you'll see we're doing a show up here", he stated. Cher herself made two appearances at the show before its Broadway debut, the most recent on Saturday in NY .

In a passionate video posted to Twitter, the "Mission Impossible" actor appeared alongside screenwriter, director and producer Christopher McQuarrie to explain the feature.

The PSA was filmed by the pair on set their upcoming collaboration, Top Gun: Maverick.

Cruise's video was inspired by the Mission: Impossible - Fallout home release (it became available on DVD, Blu-ray, and Ultra HD Blu-ray Tuesday).

We went to the moon, we electrified the nation, we established civil rights, we enfranchised the country. "We've done it. Ocasio-Cortez, who received a relatively low lottery number, chose an office only steps away from that of Pelosi.

If you haven't fiddled around with the settings on your TV, there's a good chance motion smoothing is switched on by default.

Cruise and McQuarrie acknowledge that it can be hard to navigate how to change the setting, so they're working with manufacturers to make it easier out of the gate.

However, Cruise warned that the feature has an "unfortunate side-effect", which is to make "most movies look like they were shot on high-speed video rather than film".

Teacher's Pet podcast Chris Dawson arrested over death of his wife Lyn
NSW police have stated they are comfortable with the strength of the case against Dawson despite not finding the body of Lyn. Homicide Squad Commander, Detective Superintendent Scott Cook, praised the work of Strike Force Scriven investigators.

The PSA video was welcomed with thanks and appreciation from home movie-watchers and filmmakers everywhere. But until then, Cruise and McQuarrie say, Google how to turn of "motion smoothing" on whatever brand of TV you have.
