As we talked about earlier, Allo stopped getting attention from Googleback in April as the team was pulled off of its development and put onto Android Messages. As the original article notes, there has been no activity from Google to update the platform or address a myriad of user problems, and the developer lead has left Google and moved on to Facebook.
"Verizon and Google will be rolling out enhanced messaging (RCS) in the Messages app on Google Pixel 3 and Google Pixel 3 XL beginning this Thursday, December 6th". Despite its promise, the app never gained traction and seeing it shuttered would be unsurprising. In this case, many of Allos features were ported to Android Messages, the default SMS and soon-to-be RCS client on Android phones. With Hangouts and Allo out of the way, Google may finally have a straightforward approach to messaging.
A few days after reports emerged that Google is going to kill Hangouts chat app, which has millions of users, the company is trying to clear air about what it is doing to all those gazillion chat apps it has.
Google has also said that it will be changing the classic hangout to hangout chats and hangout meets on both mobile and desktop. Indeed, Google vice president Anil Sabharwal acknowledged as much about eight months ago in an interview, saying that the company would be putting a pause on additional investment into Allo.
With Android Messages Chat, you're no longer limited to 160 characters.
