President George H.W. Bush and William Barr wave after Barr was sworn in as Attorney General in 1991

Barr was George H.W. Bush's attorney general between 1991 and 1993.

Barr's confirmation process in the Senate will likely still take weeks.

Under Bush 41, Barr was a hardliner on crime, advocating for expanding state and federal prison systems.

President Trump announced he will nominate William Barr to serve as the next attorney general.

Dani Dyer releases statement - as she confirms split from Jack Fincham
The daughter of actor Danny Dyer took to Instagram to confirm the news, after reports emerged that the pair had called it quits. The couple, who got together during the 2018 series of the reality TV show, had been in a relationship for six months.

Trump has been known to change his mind on key personnel decisions before announcing them. In 2017, when asked by The Washington Post about political donations made by lawyers on the special counsel's team, Barr said "prosecutors who make political contributions are identifying fairly strongly with a political party", and added: "I would have liked to see [Mueller] have more balance on this group". Barr later worked as a corporate general counsel and is now of counsel at a prominent worldwide law firm, Kirkland & Ellis LLP. At the time, White House officials said Trump was in no rush to nominate a permanent successor to Sessions, whom he fired November 7.

To that end, in reference to the Uranium One deal that gave a Russian state-backed firm control of 20% of USA uranium production, Barr said there is more of a reason to look into that deal than possible collusion between Russia and the Trump campaign.

President Trump could pick William Barr, who has already led the Justice Department, as his next attorney general.

However, Democrats have hinted that they will make the nomination process a nightmare for Barr, considering his past criticisms about special counsel Robert Mueller's Russian Federation investigation.

Dow Jones falls almost 800 points amid trade war, recession fears
The Dow Jones plunged nearly 800 points, while the S&P 500 was driven lower by financials, which shed nearly 4.4 per cent. The slide in bond yields, which affect interest rates on mortgages and other consumer loans, weighed on bank stocks.

Barr has been on a White House short list of contenders for several weeks, said a person with knowledge of internal discussions who was not authorized to speak publicly. He expressed confidence in Mueller early on and suggested the investigation wouldn't devolve into a "witch hunt", but he also has shared some disappointment when asked by The Washington Post past year about the donations that some of Mueller's team members made to Democrats. Barr was one tough lawyer.

Barr also defended the firing of FBI Director James Comey, claiming that his public statement recommending no charges against Clinton for her private email use encroached on the responsibilities of the Attorney General.

Senator John Cornyn of Texas, the No 2 Republican leader, agreed.

"I have worked with him for over 25 years and I believe it would be a great choice", Cullen told ABC News.
