It was evident that his health was declining when the patient was admitted

While being treated in hospital, he started coughing up blood and mucus, which apparently increased the strain on his lungs, and doctors had started treating him with oxygen tanks.

This kind of clot isn't unheard of in patients, but what was unusual was how intact it was.

A 36-year-old California man has passed away after suffering from chronic heart failure and coughing so severely that he coughed up a part of his lung. His medical history included heart failure with an ejection fraction of 20%, bioprosthetic aortic-valve replacement for bicuspid aortic stenosis, endovascular stenting of an aortic aneurysm, and placement of a permanent pacemaker for complete heart block.

"An Impella ventricular assist device was placed for management of acute heart failure, and a continuous heparin infusion was initiated for systemic anticoagulation".

Bronchial tree clots (called casts) are actually relativelycommon but only in extremely rare cases do they emerge in such pristine condition.

A man coughed up a freaky blood clot that was practically a copy of the inside of his lung, astonishing doctors around the world.

Georg Wieselthaler, a transplant and pulmonary surgeon at UCSF, told the Atlantic his team was easily able to identify the origin of the clot, it was so detailed.

"We were astonished", Wieselthaler said.

Trump says he'll nominate William Barr to be attorney general

A 2005 report in the European Journal of Cardio-Thoracic Surgery refers to a similar case where a pregnant woman coughed up a less-extensive blood clot cast also in the shape of her bronchial tree.

The 36-year-old patient was in intensive care.

Sadly, the patient died from complications of heart failure almost a week later. "It's a curiosity you can't imagine-I mean, this is very, very, very rare".
