Trump taps Army chief Milley to replace Dunford as top military adviser

US Army Chief of Staff General Mark Milley is President Donald Trump's choice to replace General Joseph Dunford as the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff

If chosen, Milley would succeed the current chairman, Gen. Joseph Dunford, whose term expires later next year. The chairman is the highest-ranking military officer in the country and serves as the principal military adviser to the president. He has served in numerous command and leadership position, including in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Trump hinted the announcement would be coming earlier Friday when he said he would be making an announcement at the Army-Navy football game he will be attending Saturday in Philadelphia.

Trump says he'll nominate William Barr to be attorney general
Barr later worked as a corporate general counsel and is now of counsel at a prominent worldwide law firm, Kirkland & Ellis LLP. President Trump could pick William Barr , who has already led the Justice Department, as his next attorney general.

Dunford is a former commandant of the Marine Corps and commander of coalition troops in Afghanistan. He is a former commander of the 82nd Airborne Division and the 5th Special Forces Group.

The expected departure would end a tumultuous tenure for Kelly, who was brought on to bring order to the White House but whose time as chief of staff has often been marked by the same infighting and controversy that has largely defined Trump's presidency from its beginning. Trump nominated him for a second two-year term last year. Milley tweeted that the Army "doesn't tolerate racism, extremism, or hatred in our ranks", seemingly a rebuke of Mr. Trump's comments.
