Sharp rise in flu cases across NY
In addition, the number of patients hospitalized with laboratory-confirmed influenza was 363, a 41 percent increase from last week.
As of the week ending December 22, nine states are experiencing high flu activity - Alabama, Colorado, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, New Jersey, New Mexico and SC - as well as New York City.
The CDC reports elevated flu activity has already been observed across the nation and Virginia is one of nine states experiencing moderate flu activity. But the most important step to stop seasonal flu, according to the CDC, is for everyone 6 months or older to get vaccinated. Flu season generally runs from October until April. That order is now codified into law.
The CDC reports last year was the worst flu season Virginia experienced in five years. During this period, there have been 1,305 influenza-related hospitalizations reported, and one influenza-associated pediatric death.
During the last three seasons, there have been 19 influenza-associated pediatric deaths in NY and an average of 15,101 influenza-related hospitalizations.
In the Hudson Valley, Westchester has the most documented cases at 98, followed by 36 in Dutchess County, 32 in Orange County, 24 in Rockland County, six in Ulster County, four in Putnam County and three in Sullivan County.
CBS News chief medical correspondent Dr. Jonathan LaPook told "CBS This Morning" on Friday this year's vaccine is about 40 percent effective, which is on par with last year's vaccine, and that the best chance of avoiding the virus is to get vaccinated.
Health officials said most people are testing positive for Influenza A H1N1.
Unlike some viruses, influenza is easily killed by soap and hot water. "We extend our deepest sympathies to the child's family and hope we can help people understand that flu is a serious illness".
