First meteor shower of 2019 to peak Thursday night

05 January 2019, 08:47 | Edward Lowe

One of the top meteor showers of the year is expected to be visible in southern Colorado Thursday night into Friday morning. Around 60 percent of the meteors will be outside the field of view in North America, though stargazers in that region should still expect to see roughly 30 to 40 percent of meteors per hour, according to the Washington Post.

With clear skies forecast there's a chance people in the north-east could witness the first meteor shower of 2019.

The meteor shower is expected to be visible in the Northern Hemisphere, especially mid-northern and far-northern latitudes, if weather conditions allow. The best time to watch the Quadrantid shower is from late night January 3 until dawn on January 4.

'Yellow vest' leader Eric Drouet arrested
Lawyer of Eric Drouet, who was detained on Wednesday for organizing an unauthorized protest , called his arrest totally arbitrary. So-called because of the high-visibility jackets they wear, the Yellow Vest protesters sprung into action in November.

Those who live in the Northern Hemisphere will have the best chance of observation, and according to Time and Date, visibility for South Florida should be "excellent".

In ideal conditions, observers have seen anywhere from 60 to 100 meteors per hour in this particular shower, though the viewing window is notoriously short. That's because the Quadrantids' namesake constellation no longer exists - at least, not as a recognized constellation. The Quadrantid shower, however, is a product of an asteroid.

"The radiant point for the Quadrantids is easy to find as it sits near the Big Dipper, one of the most well-known constellations in the sky", wrote AccuWeather meteorologist Brian Lada in the release.

'Multiple victims' in bowling alley shooting in California
A number of family members have been gathering outside the bowling alley attempting to find out the status of their loved ones. A witness interviewed by the Los Angeles Times said he hid for 15 minutes behind a bar after hearing gunfire.

The shower's short peak is because only a small stream of particles interacts with our atmosphere, and the stream occurs at a perpendicular angle.

For optimal viewing, it's recommended you drive away from the city and any bright lights - places like the grounds of the Lake Afton Public Observatory or a countryside spot are ideal.
