AT&T gets mocked by Verizon, T-Mobile for fake 5G network

AT&T is pretending like 5G is already here – and misleading users
AT&T's plan to "update" its network for 5G service by changing the logo it displays on your phone, as opposed to changing anything about its underlying network performance, reliability, capability, or features, hasn't won the company much support from its customers.
While those improvements should help boost LTE speeds, it doesn't bring them anywhere near what 5G will be capable of. AT&T's "5G E" service is, therefore, nothing of the sort. In other words, the presence of that 5G E logo on existing phones that lack the necessary 5G hardware is a little ridiculous. Now, rivals like Verizon and T-Mobile are both getting in on the action as well, hammering the company for its decision.
"The potential for 5G is awesome, but the potential to over-hype and under-deliver on the 5G promise is a temptation that the wireless industry must resist", Verizon said. Though Malady doesn't call out AT&T directly, it's pretty clear what this letter is a response to. And competitors Verizon and T-Mobile aren't impressed.

Yes, it is beginning to sound like a broken record, albeit one that is music to the ears of T-Mobile executives and stockholders. If you ask the carrier it will say "it's 5G E" which is not "5G+" (the marketing name it's using for its actual 5G network), but who will be able to realize the minutiae of that difference?
They're pushing an update to Samsung phones that passes off their LTE-A with carrier aggregation, LAA, 4×4 MIMO and 256 QAM as 5G-E (fake 5G), and now T-Mobile and Verizon are calling them out on it. We ultimately doubt it will, but we'll keep our fingers crossed anyway.
