BREXIT 'REALITY': Looming May defeat means second vote INEVITABLE, claims shock report

Crucially, MPs will be able to make and vote on amendments to this Brexit Plan B, opening the door for a second referendum to be put to the Commons.

Speaking to MPs earlier, May said: "The only way to avoid no deal is to vote for the deal".

"I also want to reassure colleagues that whatever the outcome of this debate, we will respond rapidly, recognizing that we must provide parliament with as much security as possible", Barclay said.

It took place at the start of five days of debate in the Commons after she dramatically pulled a vote last month following a warning by the whips that she was facing certain defeat.

Opposition Leader Jeremy Corbyn has described the government's handling of the Brexit process as "shambolic", while the Democratic Unionist Party - which props up the May government with its 10 members - has expressed concerns that a backstop proposal at the Irish border would lead to a permanent regulatory arrangement.

The backstop, which would only come into force if no agreement on trade was reached during the transition period, would see Northern Ireland tied to some of the EU's rules.

South Africa: 3 killed, hundreds injured in train collision in Pretoria
More people are still believed to be trapped inside the two trains which collided in Mountain View, Pretoria, on Tuesday. She said there are still people trapped under the train, and officials and emergency services are trying to reach them.

The proposals published today are created to allay concerns over the backstop but they were rejected early by Northern Ireland's DUP, who Mrs May's government relies on to stay in power.

But, at a press conference at the European parliament following her meeting with Barnier, McDonald said she had been given her own assurances over the backstop.

The prime minister has already pulled the vote once with defeat looming, and a loss for the government would plunge Britain into "uncharted territory", according to May, putting the whole process up for grabs.

But without the DUP's support, and with many of May's Conservative MP still strongly opposed, the deal can not pass.

May has repeatedly ruled out delaying Brexit, though she has also warned British lawmakers that if they reject her deal then Brexit could be derailed or the United Kingdom could leave without a deal.

Both this week's revolts were driven by Conservative MPs seeking to prevent a "no deal" scenario, which they fear would cause huge economic disruption.

MPs, headed by former Tory ministers Mr Grieve and Oliver Letwin, defied the government on an amendment aimed at making it more hard to leave the European Union without a deal.

The vote, which saw 20 legislators from May's Conservative Party rebel and side with the opposition, indicates that a majority in Parliament opposes leaving the European Union without an agreement and will try to stop it happening.

The government lost by 11 votes, with 297 MPs siding with them and 308 against.

Her spokesman denied Monday that the government could delay Brexit, after junior minister Margot James said that this might be necessary to avoid Britain leaving without no deal.

Several Conservative MPs accused Bercow of being biased against Brexit, but he insisted he was only supporting the right of MPs to challenge the government.

Conservative lawmaker and former minister Ken Clarke meanwhile repeated his call for Brexit to be delayed while parliament decides what to do next.

Flu activity begins to spike across country
Data shows that the number of flu cases are likely to spike in the coming weeks. The vaccination can reduce symptoms and duration even if you get the flu.

The future of Brexit remains deeply uncertain - with options ranging from a disorderly exit from the European Union to another membership referendum - because British lawmakers are expected on January 15 to vote down the deal May struck with the EU in November.
