Flu activity begins to spike across country

09 January 2019, 01:11 | Silvia Roy

Eighty-five per cent of children admitted to intensive care because of the flu are under the age of 10, according to the Public Health Agency of Canada.

"We would encourage everyone to get the flu shot, especially if they are at higher risk", said Dr. Genevieve Cadieux, associate medical officer of health at Ottawa Public Health.

The CDC says the number of states experiencing widespread flu activity has now doubled to 24, that includes Pennsylvania and Delaware.

In contrast, H1N1 tends to target children and younger adults more than seniors - and flu-trackers like Skowronski say this season is no exception.

The second checkpoint was put in place three weeks ago by the Gidimt'en clan, and blocked the Morice River forest service road. The UBCIC is calling "upon the Canadian Justice system to uphold the human rights and dignity of Indigenous peoples".

A child has died from the flu, the New Jersey Health Department announced Tuesday, making it the first flu-related pediatric death of the season in the state. The vaccination can reduce symptoms and duration even if you get the flu.

In this area, Pennsylvania has more than 6,400 positive flu cases, New Jersey has 439 and DE has 461.

"We're really just now getting into our flu season", said Dr. Michelle Murti of Public Health Ontario, noting that the proportion of tests on people with respiratory bugs that came back positive for influenza had doubled to 16 per cent in the week ending December 29, compared to eight per cent the week before.

Ottawa, in contrast, was seeing a lower rate of influenza overall and among children than the national rates as of the end of the year (the most recent numbers).

Russian lawyer at Trump Tower meeting charged in unrelated case
According to prosecutors, the Justice Department asked the Russian government to assist its investigation, which it refused to do. Veselnitskaya, an attorney based in Russian Federation , was retained to assist the defendants.

"We know this change may be hard for some of our patient families", the hospital's news release said.

Data shows that the number of flu cases are likely to spike in the coming weeks. It was the deadliest in 40 years when less than half of Americans got vaccinated.

"Flu is now beginning to circulate, and as schools reopen and people return to work we are likely to see increased levels".
