In addition to a new set of Google Assistant devices from partners like Lenovo and Sonos, one of the most fascinating and helpful announcements coming out of CES is actually a new built-in feature called the interpreter mode.
During the debut of the Google Pixel 3 smartphone past year, the American tech giant also announced the Google Home Hub that attempts to deliver the same Assistant functionality but has a screen to display contextual information.
Although Android users will get the most out of Google Assistant's integration into Maps, it looks like Google is squarely targeting iOS users, in a bid to lure them away from Apple's own voice assistant Siri. For those who don't know, this is the same building where this year's biggest tech conference, CES 2019, will take place. Just ask Assistant to "take me home" and Google Maps will open from where you will be able to get Assistant to perform all of the above functionality. You can just say, "Hey Google, check in to my flight", Google will automatically retrieve your flight confirmation number from your mail and start the check-in process.
Google Assistant is winning the platform war when it comes to mobile phones but still has some catching up to do in the smart home market.
As usual, though, you'll notice some differences in the Google Maps/Assistant experience depending on what kind of device you're using.
Google has been demoing the feature at the American show and is branding the function as a way to have conversation with people from other nationalities, even if you are not fluent in their spoken language.
You can check out all the new updates to Google Assistant here. Google says Interpreter Mode will work on normal Google Home speakers as well, but without the added benefit of a written translation. The feature will be rolling out in the next few weeks.
