At CES, Audi is presenting a technology that adopts virtual content to the movements of a vehicle in real-time, letting backseat passengers play video games that are linked to a car's movements.
In order to move forward with this technology, Audi has co-founded a start-up named Holoride, which will then use an open platform to allow automakers and content developers to create additional "extended reality formats" such as arcade games, underwater adventures, space exploration and even educational trips through historical cities.
Audi's VR experiment consists of a set of virtual reality goggles that take the human mind into a game titled Marvel'sAvengers: Rocket's Rescue Run. Audi is demonstrating the concept game in its 2019 E-Tron, the German carmaker's first fully electric SUV. If the vehicle turns a tight corner, the player curves around an opposing spaceship in virtual reality. Since the visual experience and the user's actual perception are synchronised, conventional movies, series or presentations can also be viewed with a significantly reduced chance of motion sickness. holoride intends to launch the new form of entertainment in the market within the next three years using standard VR glasses for backseat passengers.
Audi is showing off some of its cars and also their technology at this years CES and the auto maker is also showing off a new VR experience. Automakers have been steadily dipping their toes deeper into digital tech to enhance the experience for drivers through mobile and voice-powered features. But what about the in-car experience for passengers?
The VR vehicle entertainment platform could be appealing to content providers looking to reach an engaged and captive audience.
These issues could change as ride-hailing gives way to a the future of self-driving cars that will free up passengers for other activities as their vehicles work on autopilot.
To launch the VR system commercially, Audi Electronics Venture co-founded a startup company, Holoride, which plans to license the virtual-reality entertainment platform - created to use standard VR glasses for backseat passengers - to other carmakers and content developers within the next three years.
The days when carmakers did cars and nowt else are long dead.
Auto companies have been using virtual reality (VR) to improve and streamline the manufacturing process as well as the helping pick and customise their new cars before purchase.
