Australian police charge man over hazardous parcels sent to diplomatic offices

10 January 2019, 05:32 | Glen Norman

Some packages were reported to be labelled asbestos.

Australian police claimed that the man was arrested at his home in rural Victoria state late Wednesday, hours after several consulates - including Pakistani mission - in Melbourne received the suspicious packages.

A man has been arrested after almost 40 suspicious packages were discovered at foreign embassies and consulates across Australia.

Avan appeared at the Melbourne Magistrates Court on Thursday, the Associated Press reported.

The man is expected to appear before Melbourne Magistrate's Court on Thursday morning.

Police alleged that the man had sent 38 parcels in all to consulates and embassies in Melbourne, Canberra and Sydney.

MPs vote to further bind Theresa May's hands on Brexit
The de-facto deputy Prime Minister, David Lidington, said the only way to avoid a disruptive no-deal "is for Parliament to endorse and ratify a deal".

Australian police arrested a Shepparton man after he allegedly mailed 38 packages containing a risky substance to diplomatic missions throughout southeast Australia.

Police did not release the suspect's name.

The Indian and United States consulates on St Kilda Road, along with the British, Swiss, German Korean, Greek, Italian, Pakistani and Egyptian missions were targeted.

Avan did not apply for bail and is due back before court on March 4.

Police said they had recovered most of the packages.

"The maximum penalty for the offence the man has been charged with is 10 years imprisonment", the statement added.

In a statement the AFP and Victoria Police said they believed the substance was sourced from his home in Shepparton.

There is no ongoing threat to the public, authorities said.

The incident comes just days after emergency services were called to the Argentinian consulate in Sydney's CBD after reports that a suspicious substance was found in a parcel.

At least two consulates in Melbourne did not contact authorities about packages until they received an email from the Australian government.

"After learning of incidents at three offices in Sydney and Canberra, DFAT sent a note to all diplomatic missions in Canberra on January 8 alerting them to the possibility of suspicious packages being delivered by mail", a spokesman said.

DFAT said IT had sent an email to all Canberra-based diplomatic missions yesterday, and then to other consulates across Australia.
