Police seek staff DNA over vegetative woman's baby

The revelation that a Phoenix woman in a vegetative state recently gave birth has prompted Hacienda Health Care CEO Bill Timmons to resign putting a spotlight on the safety of long-term care settings for patients who are severely disabled or incapacitated

A lawyer for the woman's family meanwhile said they are "traumatized and in shock" by the "abuse and neglect" of their daughter but that "the baby boy has been born into a loving family and will be well cared for".

An attorney for the woman's family says the baby boy will be well cared for.

He acknowledged the public interest in the story but confirmed the family are "not emotionally ready" to come forward with their own comment at this time.

Hacienda CEO Bill Timmons stepped down Monday, spokesman David Leibowitz said. Authorities served a search warrant Tuesday.

Phoenix police have not responded to PEOPLE's request for comment on the case, and so far have declined to publicly discuss the investigation.

The woman was an enrolled tribal member of the San Carlos Apache tribe of southeastern Arizona, according to officials.

The facility said in a statement last Friday that it had "recently become aware of a deeply disturbing incident involving the health and safety of a Hacienda resident" but did not provide more information. A source told AZFamily.com the staff only learned the patient was pregnant when she began to moan - an indication she was going into labor.

"The baby was in distress", the police said in their statement Wednesday.

He didn't release the conditions of the woman and her child, who will be taken in by his mother's family.

Police said they didn't have any updates Tuesday but Sgt. Tommy Thompson said Friday there was an ongoing investigation.

'Sadly, one of her caretakers was not to be trusted and took advantage of her.

Hacienda HealthCare has said it is cooperating fully with police.

To find the possible assailant, police in the southwestern U.S. state are comparing DNA samples from the baby with male employees at the Hacienda Del Sol care centre, where the 29-year-old woman was a patient.

Investigators launched their case after learning a 29-year-old woman gave birth to a son on December 29, despite having been in a vegetative state for 14 years following a near-drowning accident.

He also said that anyone who knew about the pregnancy but failed to report it could face charges.

In a statement, board member Gary Orman said the facility "will accept nothing less than a full accounting of this absolutely horrifying situation". According to its website, the facility serves infants, children and young adults who are "medically fragile".

Let's hope the authorities catch the perpetrator so that justice can be served.

The case is "disturbing, to put it mildly", said Jon Meyers, executive director of The Arc of Arizona, an advocacy group for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Gov. Doug Ducey's office has called the situation "deeply troubling".

"I can't believe someone receiving that level of constant care wasn't recognized as being pregnant prior to the time she delivered", Meyers told the AP.
