Longford people in flu risk group are urged to get vaccinated

10 January 2019, 07:51 | Silvia Roy

Data shows that the number of flu cases are likely to spike in the coming weeks.

Twenty-four states and Guam were reporting widespread influenza activity - meaning the virus has spread to many parts of the state, regardless of severity - as of December 29, the latest date included in the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC) weekly flu report.

The most common strain that's circulating is H1N1, which is more likely to affect young adults and children, rather than the elderly.

"It's a different season, different profile".

The death follows last year's severe flu season, during which an estimated 80,000 people were lost to the viral infection, Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Director Robert Redfield said in September.

Malta allows 49 migrants stranded off coast since December to disembark
Malta said another 78 migrants would be allowed to stay in Malta, and 44 Bangladeshi migrants would be sent back to their country. Malta last week allowed the boats to shelter near its coasts from the bad weather but would not let them disembark the migrants.

Those in at-risk groups include people aged 65 and over, pregnant women and people with chronic illness.

Last season at that point, 11,275 cases of lab-confirmed flu had been reported.

Officials did not release the child's age, gender and hometown.

Seventy-one of those kids had to be admitted to the ICU.

Malaysia probes claim China offered to bail out 1MDB
Najib is said to have offered the Chinese leadership, also, that ships of war may, in the future, calling at two Malaysian ports. The WSJ reached out to the Chinese government information office for a comment on the story but has yet to receive an answer.

"This year's vaccine is a good match for the strains of flu that are circulating and it is not too late to be vaccinated".

Health officials urged state residents to get flu shots and take precautions during flu seasons, including washing your hands frequently, covering any coughs and sneezes and staying home if you are sick. These tests are rapid, like the name suggests but depending on the actual strain of the virus going around they can have varying success in properly identifying the flu. "Less often, a person might get flu by touching a surface or object that has flu virus on it and then touching their own mouth, nose, or possibly their eyes".

Flu vaccine critics, including naturopathy practitioners, argue that mercury, detergents and other additives sometimes packed into the shots can do more harm than good.

"So we would like everybody who's eligible to get the vaccine", said Russell, noting that it takes about two weeks for antibodies induced by the shot to come into full effect.
