Former Trump Lawyer Cohen to Testify Publicly Before Congress

President Donald Trump's former personal attorney exits the United States Courthouse after sentencing at the in New York

His testimony before the House oversight and reform committee on 7 February will be the first major public oversight hearing for Democrats, who have promised greater scrutiny of Trump after winning control of the House in the 2018 midterm elections.

He has pleaded guilty to campaign finance charges related to hush money payments he facilitated for women claiming to have slept with Trump, and to other financial crimes not related to the 2016 campaign.

In a statement to CNN, Cohen said he agreed to testify "in furtherance of my commitment to cooperate and provide the American people with answers".

"I look forward to having the privilege of being afforded a platform with which to give a full and credible account of the events which have transpired", Cohen said, according to The New York Times.

Cohen told Stephanopoulos that Trump directed him to arrange the payments to Stormy Daniels and Karen McDougal because then-candidate Trump "was very concerned about how this would affect the election" if their allegations of affairs became public before voters cast their ballots.

"I thank Michael Cohen for agreeing to testify before the Oversight Committee voluntarily", he said in a statement about the upcoming hearing".

Cohen pleaded guilty in November for lying to Congress during private testimony in 2017 about the timing and extent of discussions he had about a Russian real estate deal during Trump's campaign.

It's unclear whether Cohen's testimony contains evidence that could lead to the impeachment of the U.S. president, but given the fact that Trump's casually-tweeted comments (such as criticisms of the Federal Reserve chairman Jerome Powell) have been correlated with major turbulence in the stock markets, the last thing the economy needs at the moment is another wild card. In the plea, Cohen said: "I made these misstatements to be consistent with Individual 1's political messaging and out of loyalty to Individual 1".

Known as Trump's "fixer", part of Cohen's job was to make the president's problems go away - by any means necessary.

Tehran Confirms Reports of US Citizen's Arrest in Iran
A Department of State spokesperson told the BBC: "We are aware of reports of the detention of a U.S. citizen in Iran". Michael White is one of several U.S. citizens and other foreign nationals held in Iran.

Cohen acknowledged in the Mueller investigation that he lied to Congress by saying negotiations over a Trump Tower in Moscow had ended in January 2016 when he actually pursued the project into that June, well into Trump's 2016 presidential campaign.

Special counsel Robert Mueller is also investigating "any links and/or coordination between the Russian government and individuals associated" with the Trump campaign.

Special Counsel Robert Mueller for many months has been investigating Russia's interference in the 2016 USA presidential election, possible collusion between the Kremlin and the Trump campaign and potential obstruction of justice.

The lawyer has cooperated with Mueller's investigation into Russian interference in the election since previous year, which has prompted anger from the president.

"Mr. Cohen has expressed an interest in telling his personal story in open session, and we welcome his testimony before the Committee on Oversight and Reform", Schiff said.
