By combining this detailed observation with similar surveys of the Milky Way, Andromeda, and other galaxies in the Local Group, astronomers will be able to learn more about how stars form and evolve. It can be seen with the naked eye under the right conditions-it appears as a "faint, blurry object in the constellation of Triangulum", a statement from Hubble said. He subsequently documented when in their history these Local Group dwarf galaxies stopped making stars, or "quenched", and how this was affected by the proximity of the larger galaxies, including the Milky Way. The Triangulum galaxy is about 60,000 light-years across, which is much smaller than the Andromeda Galaxy that measures 200,000 light-years in diameter.
But in a new 665-million pixel image taken by the NASA/European Space Agency (ESA) Hubble Space Telescope, the spiral galaxy's billions of stars are brightly showcased. However, the detailed image released by the Hubble telescope clearly reveals the central region of the Triangulum Galaxy and its inner spiral arms.
The galaxy is a notable member of the Local Group of galaxies, an assembly of more than 50 galaxies bound together by gravity.
The latest image was taken with Hubble's Advanced Camera for Surveys. "Most notably, Triangulum's star formation is 10 times more intense than in the comparable Hubble panorama of the neighboring Andromeda galaxy".
The abundance of gas clouds in the Triangulum Galaxy is precisely what drew astronomers to conduct this detailed survey. What it does have, however, is a huge amount of gas and dust that allows for stars to be formed at a rapid rate of approximately one solar mass every two years.
The glowing blue areas show where stars are being born, such as in the nebulas of hot, ionized hydrogen gas like star-forming region NGC 604 in the upper left.
