Padraig Harrington 'Thrilled' To Be Team Europe Captain For 2020 Ryder Cup

Padraig Harrington to lead Europe at 2020 Ryder Cup at Whistling Straits

We analyse the main strengths of Thomas Bjorn's Ryder Cup captaincy after Europe appointed Padraig Harrington as their leader for 2020. Stricker has also been a vice captain at the last three Ryder Cups.

Bjorn's side put on a ruthless display while outplaying the United States in a 17.5-10.5 victory at Le Golf National in September past year.

Harrington was a popular choice among Europe's victorious team to take on the captaincy and became a near-certainty when Lee Westwood announced he did not want to be considered for the role, preferring to target Italy in 2022.

Speaking at Wentworth, Harrington said: "I'm thrilled to be named captain for 2020".

He added: 'It's something I did think long and hard about.

"I strongly looked at the fact we were going to a golf course that is at least European-style".

Wawrinka comments on Roger Federer, Rafa Nadal, Novak Djokovic's dominance
Williams will face Tatjana Maria in the first round, and could meet either Genie Bouchard or Peng Shaui in the second. Not just physically, but also mentally, to see that I could beat Grigor Dimitrov twice, he was top-10 at that time.

"I really want to be a help, I want to hopefully lead the Ryder Cup and the European Tour in a better place after two years, but I know we want continuity in Europe, we want to keep moving on".

Harrington, a victor of two Open Championship titles and the US PGA Championship, has been named as Thomas Bjorn's successor for 2020.

"As a player you're very one dimensional about doing your thing and as a vice captain you do a lot more".

Harrington has a wealth of experience when it comes to the Ryder Cup.

"It's an away match, and I have to be part of this and try to find an edge to try and get the most out of their abilities and hopefully get a win, " Harrington said.

"I'm the right man for the job at this time", he said.

Rare penny found in 1947 could be worth more than $1 million
The young coin collector made a decision to keep the cent in his collection for more than 70 years, until he died in September. One penny, in particular, is now dubbed the " most famous error coin" by Heritage Auctions, who is auctioning the penny.

The Irishman played in six Ryder Cups (four wins) and was vice captain at the last three (Gleneagles, Hazeltine and Paris).

However, Bookmakers have been quick to make U.S. favourites - although they are yet to confirm their skipper with the likes of Steve Stricker and Fred Couples in contention.

Pavard played in six of France's seven games at the World Cup finals, only missing their final group game against Denmark, and he scored his first worldwide goal in the last-16 clash with Argentina. "You just have to know the man behind the scenes".

Harrington, who is now out of action after slipping and breaking a bone in his wrist, says selecting five vice-captains is "a must" and now favours three wildcard picks.

Harrington played in the biennial event in six consecutive contests, including winningm teams in 2002, 2004, 2006 and 2010.
